Lesson 1 — Electronics for kids — Why?
This story is part of a series. See this starting page for links to other lessons.
In this lesson we look at electronics around us and look at a bunch of components and try to name them.
To inspire creativity and brainstorming in children begin by simply introducing the topic and asking simple questions about their every day experience with electronics. Spend a few minutes listing and writing things down.
Here are some sample responses from my son.
Why are we doing this?
Because I like to build stuff.
What electronics are around us?
TV and remote, Tablet, Alexa, Headphones, Roomba, Cars, Oven, Phone, Solar panel, Playstation….
Before we end this brief lesson, let us look at a few different electronic components. Don’t worry about what they do yet, just help the child learn the name. You can use the pictures below as a reference. We will use these in future lessons.
For other components try to have the child gentle insert them into the breadboard with 1 pin per hole and however it fits. We will not power them in this lesson so it does not matter how they are oriented.
In the next lesson we will make a basic circuit.
